Rhinoplasty and Chin Augmentation: The Perfect Pair
Rhinoplasty or nose reshaping is one of the most performed plastic surgery procedures in Australia today. This surgery can be used to correct defects, while bringing symmetry and proportion to this central feature of the face. Although many patients are focused on the appearance of the nose when they come in for a plastic surgery consultation, there are reasons to consider other facial features when determining the best outcome in rhinoplasty. The most common feature to pair with the nose for a beautifully proportioned facial profile is the chin.
The Importance of Chin Position
When it comes to determining the proportion of the nose to the rest of the face, the chin is the most important feature to consider. A weak or receding chin can make a nose look longer or more prominent than it really is. By taking the shape and size of the chin into consideration with the nose, it is more likely you will achieve a truly balanced and aesthetically pleasing facial profile. In fact, a large percentage of patients will likely see much more satisfactory results from their nose surgery if the chin is appropriately enhanced as well.
The Benefits of Combining Procedures
There are a number of reasons why combining procedures into a single surgery is a good option:
- Only one round of anaesthesia reduces anaesthesia-related risks
- Patients only have to go through one recovery period
- The cost of combining procedures may be slightly less
- Results of the combined procedure tend to be more dramatic
Study Shows Long-Lasting Results
In 2013, researchers from the University of Verona looked at whether combining rhinoplasty and chin augmentation achieved higher satisfaction rates among patients. For the study, the scientists looked at 90 patients that underwent a combination of these procedures between 2002 and 2004, following up with the patients three years after their procedure. The results of that study, which were published in the March 2013 JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, found that in addition to satisfaction with the procedure, the patients surveyed also demonstrated greater stability with their chin augmentations. More than half experienced almost no change in their chin profile three years after the procedure, indicating results were long-lasting as well as aesthetically satisfactory.
